Kochhar began her career with ICICI as a management trainee in 1984. In 1993 when ICICI entered commercial banking, she was deputed to ICICI Bank as a part of the core team charged with setting up the bank. In 2001, she was promoted to executive director, heading the bank’s retail business. In a short span of approximately five years, ICICI Bank emerged as the largest retail financer in India, and rose from being a small bank to its position as the largest private sector bank in the country within a decade of its inception.
