Stevens has been governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia since 2006 and is chairman of the Reserve Bank Board and of the Payments System Board, Council of Financial Regulators and Financial Markets Foundation for Children. He has held various positions at the bank, including head of the international department and assistant governor (Economic) from 1996-2001, prior to his appointment as deputy governor. Stevens made his name as a hawkish central banker after he raised interest rates to a 14-year peak of 7.25% in March 2008, just as the effects of the global financial crisis reverberated through the world economy.
