Zeti Akhtar Aziz

Name:
Zeti Akhtar Aziz
Current Designation:
Former Governor
Current Institution:
Bank Negara Malaysia
Country:
Malaysia
Specialisation:
Chairmen, CEOs and Presidents

Aziz assumed office in 2000 as the first woman to head Bank Negara, Malaysia’s central bank. She was instrumental in pegging the ringgit to the U.S. dollar, banning offshore trading of the currency. She oversaw the subsequent transition of the ringgit to a managed float in 2005 and the gradual relaxation of foreign exchange rules. She also started a direct renminbi-ringgit exchange in August 2010, the first such emerging-market window for the Chinese currency outside the intermediary role of the US dollar. Aziz is known to champion the concept of a global Islamic financial system with Malaysia at the forefront. She retired in April 2016 and is currently a member of the international advisory panel of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
